Stories are told together.
Julia brings over 15 years of experience writing and developing screenplays. More than this, she has experience on film sets, in the editing room, producing indie films, directing, and acting. She understands storytelling and structure from every aspect of filmmaking and has worked with writers from diverse backgrounds through a range of concerns to help them tell their story.
“Having worked with Julia at Sundance, I’ve seen firsthand her deep understanding of the diverse needs of developing artists. She has exquisite taste and brings a profound empathy for the frustrations and challenges filmmakers encounter. There’s no doubt her services will help you forge a deeper, more personal connection to your writing.”
-Michael Mohan, writer/director/producer
“Julia is on my short list of people who can read and give transformative feedback on a wide variety of genres: scripts, of course, but also poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and more. Best of all, Julia has both a sharp eye and a huge heart -- and if you're a writer looking for feedback on a beloved project, you absolutely must work with someone who has both.”
-Julie Sugar, writer
“I was lucky enough to work with Julia on my screenplay and she even helped me organize a script reading for it. Julia helps you find your path to your story by asking the right questions. She understands how to build a narrative while throwing away the rulebook. Julia approaches your script in the way that works best for you, because she sees you and hears you.”
- Yolonda Ross, writer/actor/director
“Julia has a great grasp of storytelling and is a warm, generous, and insightful person.”
- Pamela Romanowsky, writer/director
“Julia has an amazing passion for storytelling and always gives brilliant notes. I really value her opinion and the objective feedback she provides is a breath of fresh air when you can't see the wood for the trees. Julia's instincts lead to great story discoveries and she is definitely someone I would love to work with again.”
-Akaash Meeda, writer/director
With over 20 years of film and production experience under her belt, Julia knows screenwriting. She is proud to include a decade of working at the Sundance June Filmmakers Lab, producing script readings, among her experiences. Building relationships with screenwriters and filmmakers who have gone on to have prestigious careers in Hollywood, Julia has consulted on award winning projects such as Marielle Heller’s brilliant debut, “Diary of a Teenage Girl.” She has also produced several indie shorts in London such as “Fee” starring Munroe Bergdorf, as well as a documentary, “Echotone.” She recently directed her first short, and has done stints at The Daily Show and The Public Theatre in New York. She holds an MFA from Goldsmiths College in London.
Julia’s consultations are discussion based, to enable a clear understanding of your goals as a writer and who you are as a storyteller.
To begin the process, Julia will read your script, share brief notes, and discuss what worked or didn’t and why. If you have specific concerns, she will work with you to find the best resolution and aim to give you tools you can use not only now, but in the future. If you are looking to prepare a script for submission to workshops, Julia has experience and insight to steer you in the right direction.
There is no one correct way to write. Every writer has different needs, perspectives, and experiences. Julia’s goal is to help you tell your story in the way that suits it best and allows for a process that works for you. She understands that just as each story is unique, so is the person telling it.
Each writer brings their own strengths and challenges to their work. When it feels like you’re reaching out to your script but it’s not reaching back, the best remedy is workshopping it with someone else. There are many ways to approach screenwriting, and it’s important to find the one that works best for you. Julia gas worked with screenwriters from all walks of life, neurotypical and neurodiverse, of various nationalities and backgrounds.
No one tells their story alone. Finding the right support for your writing is the first and most important, step.
